Mac OS X.5 Leopard Crashes Hard Drive

Submitted by Ben Finklea on October 26, 2007 - 5:44pm.
  • Apple
  • Mac OS X

A brief departure from our normal fare...

The short version: Backup your hard disk before you install the new Mac OS X Leopard.

The long version: We bought a multi-pack of Leopard for the office. We've tried installing it 6 times. It failed twice and on one of the Mac Minis it refused to recognize the hard drive after rebooting. We had to reformat the drive and reinstall Leopard. Fortunately all the critical data was backed up. (Thank you Mozy!) But about 8GB of iTunes files were wiped. Also, that user is wondering how he's going to sync his iPhone to a computer that thinks it's a new installation and will format the iPhone before syncing.

On the other failed installation it hung about halfway through. Fortunately this one would reboot so we tried again (it's still running at this moment).

After doing a bit more research online we find that some sites are recommending the "Archive and Install" option which creates a whole new System folder and archives the old one. We didn't use this function (it's hidden) but we certainly will on the next install.

If only I would've had Time Machine installed...

Leopard Crashed 2 Hard Drives For Me

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on December 11, 2007 - 10:57pm.

I purchased a family pack of Leopard. It installed fine on my MacBook Pro (or so I thought) and I've been using it every since...except my computer is SLOW and prone to locking up and/or crashing all the time.

In the meantime, I installed it on my Powerbook and it KILLED the hard drive. Thank goodness for that extended warranty I bought!

Today - I went in to Apple store because some of the options in mail have disappeared...when they saw how SLOW my computer is, they tested it and the hard drive is dying...they said Leopard pushed it "over the edge". I'm backing up everything tonight and will surrender my lifeline tomorrow for the several days it takes to replace the hard drive.

Bummer.

I am really disappointed, although I must say service at the Willowbend store in Plano has been wonderful.

Other low grade I give Leopard is I can no longer sync my Treo 755 which I purchased right before my Leopard upgrade. There is no way I will buy the iPhone at this early date - especially since this first release of Leopard has been such a disaster for me!

Hard Drive Crash with Leopard - THE ANSWER!

OK I found out what the deal is...

http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/warning/seagate-25+inch-hard-drive-flaw-affec...

SEAGATE Hard drives made in China ARE crashing at an alarming rate.

Can you say CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT??

I figure my loss here is close to $4,000 in software alone.

How is it possible that Apple didn't know about this?

Leopard didn't crash your

Leopard didn't crash your drive. Almost certainly, your drive was already in the early stages of failing and the strain of installing a new OS (it could have been any OS) caused it to finally crap out. Its also a good idea to verify your hard drive with Disk Utility prior to an OS install.

Apparently NOT!

Hard drive crash

Submitted by Anonymous on October 31, 2007 - 3:10pm.

I had the same things this morning....

I installed the family pack on both a power mac and a macbook. When tried to install it on my macbook pro it told me that it couldn't install without formatting my hard drive. I off course didn't want this and cancelled the installer. I restarted my system and it just showed the apple logo for some time and then went completely black!!

It wouln't start up anymore.....I tried to run disk utility and verify my drive. It told me that it could not verify my drive as it was damaged and could not be repaired!!!!!!

I called Apple, we tried every option (via phone) and nothing worked. I just came back from the Mac store and they kept my computer to see if they can save my files.....or better said....my life!! Everything is in there and I was stupid enough not to back up before attempting the installantion.

Strangely enough they told me at the store that I was the first person who came in with this problem. The gentleman told me that it might have been a hardware problem caused by my computer and that this was very unlikely caused by Leopard...yeah right!! That same second a lady was helped at the desk next to me and she had EXCACTLY the same problem and lost all her files.....

They wanted me to !!!BUY!!! a program to try and recover my files..........what??? That off course didn't happen and they decided to keep my computer for a closer look. I'm now waiting and hoping that they can fix this.......I'll let you know.....

I'm used to be a big "Mac fan".....from Ipod to Iphone...I have it all....but lately Mac is pulling off some nasty tricks.....not nice....

Leopard crashed my hard drive two

Submitted by Anonymous on November 3, 2007 - 1:45am.

I got the family pack and was installing it on our second computer, a Macbook Pro, and it failed to install and it ruined the hard drive. It isn't able to boot from it, and it looks like it will need to be reformatted to work again. I'm really disappointed with Apple this go around.

Hard drive crashes, G5

Submitted by Anonymous on October 26, 2007 - 10:18pm.

I ran the install of Leopard tonight on my G5. The G5 was configured with a RAID set and Leopard brought down one of the hard drives completely. I did the "Upgrade" (not archive and install). Now when I boot, I get to the login screen and the system freezes. Off to do diagnostics to see if the second drive is fried too.
